Activity Based Learning for Transportation Engineering Courses (Region X TEDPP)
This is the web site for the project “Development, Deployment, and Assessment of a New Educational Paradigm for Transportation Professionals and University Students”. This project was a collaboration of the Region X Transportation Consortium, whose members include the University of Idaho, Portland State University, the University of Washington, the University of Alaska. Washington State University also served on the project team. The project was sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration.
The project team developed four new activity-based transportation courses including “Traffic Signal Systems Operations and Design”, “Understanding and Communicating Transportation Data”, “Introduction to Freight Transportation”, and “Rural Highway Design and Safety”. The courses are learner-centered in which activities completed by students form the basis for their learning. The courses were offered fourteen times to a total of 195 students between 2009 and 2012. Activity books that include 142 activities were developed for the four courses.
The project final report describes the approach taken to achieve the project objectives, the products and deliverables, and the assessment and evaluation of the work completed. The course materials, including the activity books for students, facilitation materials for instructors, and many other supplemental files, are available at the following links:
Documents that describe the process followed by each team in designing the four courses are included at the following sites:
Interim project information developed between 2009 and 2011 is available at the following link: http://www.webs1.uidaho.edu/TEDPP-RegionX/
